Although the scene of bamboo hedges is one of the features of Lanyang plain, it has almost faded away with the changes of contemporary trends.
To preserve the particular appearance of bamboo hedges in this community, through the funds sponsored by the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, the Pearl community has been promoting enthusiastically a project designated as "A New Image of Rural Village-Bamboo Hedges Community Project", which will develop the folk residence industry based on the traditional construction landscapes.

For the time being, there are still 15 constructions with bamboo hedges remained in The Pearl community, which are expected to develop as folk residences.
In the forthcoming future, mentioned residences under development, combined with the near-constructed bicycle lane, shall connect regions between the Chinshui park and Pearl community, and are planned to be a package of facilities to activate commercial opportunities for tourism in Tungshan area. Making use of the good operating incomes of folk residence business as tempting motivation, it will encourage the reconstruction and preservation of the landscape of agricultural bamboo hedges.
The operation of folk residences is different from modern hotels. The former bases upon an interactive type of interpersonal relationship and emphasizes the interpersonal confidence and considerate service attitude. Coordinating with the objective of knowing native culture as the main axle, it is necessary to treat guests with "sincerity".
In the development history of Lanyang plain for more than two hundreds years, each region has been filled with arduous experiences when exploring new territories, and adventures of interaction with the Kuvalan tribe and other aboriginal people. All the Han families came from Mainland China to Formosa and, having passed through many places, arrived at Ilan plain wherein they settled down to explore the land. Afterward, they were forced to emigrate to fertile and productive lands to establish new communities and granges. Different environmental characteristics gave birth to different industries, cultures and life experiences, and thus touching stories, diverse legends and individually different images. Ever since the ancient times, the Tungshan river system used to cause flood disasters after heavy rains and resulted in sufferings for the local residents. Furthermore, thanks to the advantage of fertile ground, each village showed different ritual source and influence, and marvelous achievements of outstanding personas with talents cultivated in this area. The aforesaid events resulted in fascinating stories of native names of places, evolution of unique customs, which are causes contributing to the diverse appearances of Pearl community in the southern region of the Lanyang stream.

The Council of Agriculture of Executive Yuan sponsors the Pearl Community Development Association to undertake the professional village project of agricultural appearance refreshing
and proceed to the surveying and drawing of various bamboo-hedged communities.
Architect Mr. Chang, Chung-chien as adviser has invited the participation of Ou Chi-chia, Chairman
of the Department of Architecture of Lanyang Institute of Technology, and Chiu, Chi-hao, Lecturer of the same institute, who instruct their students to realize the plan and execution tasks based on the existing 25 bamboo-hedged villages, permitting their students to bring into full play the theories, knowledge, and practical application learned in the classroom, and combine their skills with the community affairs, so as to offer precious contribution to the Pearl community.

The bamboo hedge is an important landscape of Ilan county and the only living evidence of Han immigrants remained from early period. Its scholastic value has been ignored for long time.
It has also turned to be one of the significant reference indicators for farmers' values of life in transformation, i.e. the pattern of the new agricultural residences tends to follow the popular culture, thus versatile and various worldwide architectural technologies and patterns have been established in the green agricultural granges in Lanyang plain. These buildings have arisen exclamation and heartbreak for their flourishing and colorful appearances.

The bamboo hedge survey does not attempt to control the various architectural technologies and international cultural patterns of agricultural residences. The main purpose is to highlight the rise
and decline of bamboo hedges in the Lanyang plain for world's observation. This is an important
stage for the transformation of the traditional agriculture into diversification. As to the unique local scenic resources, it is considered as a precious heritage with infinite possibilities.
Therefore, developing the tourist folk residences to activate the economic growth in agricultural
areas shall be a feasible direction.
